“I returned because I wanted to create a space for something that I believe is pure and incorruptible.”
— Siddhartha Chattopadhyay
Founder,
RockTrailSleep · Almora
Siddhartha grew up in Almora, once a cultural capital of Kumaon, a place that drew seekers and scholars from around the world. He started climbing in 2016, and when COVID-19 brought everything to a halt, he came home.
Almora had always carried its own contradictions, and Siddhartha had grown up aware of them. Over the years, those contradictions had only deepened, leading to a gradual erosion of the values that once made Kumaon remarkable. “Take what you can and leave” had become the operating logic in government, in tourism, in everyday life.
So he started climbing with two friends. Then more people joined. Then workshops. Then routes. Nearly 50 documented climbs across three to four locations around Almora: each one developed by hand, each one a small act of reclamation.
RockTrailSleep was built on top of that foundation. Not as a way to commercialise the land, but as a way to sustain it. When you travel with Siddhartha, you’re not booking a trip. You’re participating in something that was already happening long before you arrived.
