Hosted journeys in Kumaon

Tell Siddhartha what you’re drawn to. The rest unfolds from there.

“I returned because I wanted to create a space for something that I believe is pure and incorruptible.”

— Siddhartha Chattopadhyay
Founder, RockTrailSleep · Almora

Siddhartha grew up in Almora, once a cultural capital of Kumaon, a place that drew seekers and scholars from around the world. He started climbing in 2016, and when COVID-19 brought everything to a halt, he came home.

Almora had always carried its own contradictions, and Siddhartha had grown up aware of them. Over the years, those contradictions had only deepened, leading to a gradual erosion of the values that once made Kumaon remarkable. “Take what you can and leave” had become the operating logic in government, in tourism, in everyday life.

So he started climbing with two friends. Then more people joined. Then workshops. Then routes. Nearly 50 documented climbs across three to four locations around Almora: each one developed by hand, each one a small act of reclamation.

RockTrailSleep was built on top of that foundation. Not as a way to commercialise the land, but as a way to sustain it. When you travel with Siddhartha, you’re not booking a trip. You’re participating in something that was already happening long before you arrived.

The Essential Guide to Climbing
in the Almora Area

The first guide of its kind in the region. Written to introduce climbing to the local community and establish Almora as an adventure gateway of Kumaon. Volume I, 2022.

Developing Kumaon’s climbing
from the ground up.

Most of what exists in Almora today was built by Siddhartha and a small group of committed local climbers — by hand, with minimal resources, out of love for the place. Here is what that effort has produced.

~50+

Routes Documented

Nearly 50+ climbs across three to four locations around Almora, all developed, cleaned, and recorded by the RTS community. Ready to climb.

4

Active Crag Locations

Bouldering and Sport Climbing sites within reach of Almora, accessible to beginners and experienced climbers. All within the Kumaon landscape.

Still to Be Discovered

The Kumaon has barely been mapped. The potential for new routes, new crags, and a fully realised climbing community here is enormous.

Travel that gives
something back.

As RockTrailSleep grows, so does the reinvestment. The aim is simple: each trip should leave something behind that strengthens the place rather than extracting from it. A portion of what comes in goes back into climbing access, route development, and the slower work of making outdoor education more accessible to the public.

Our Approach

Siddhartha doesn’t approach this as a set of options to choose from. He suggests places based on what he knows, what he has seen, and what he thinks will actually work for you.

If you reach out, he’ll tell you honestly whether what you’re looking for makes sense here. If it does, he’ll help put it together in a way that feels right.

01

You reach out

Tell Siddhartha what you’re looking for — rough dates, travel style, budget range. No forms. Just a conversation.

02

He designs your trip

Siddhartha selects the right properties from his personal network and builds an itinerary that actually fits. No generic packages.

03

You travel with context

Arrive knowing the land, the people, and the purpose behind every choice. Leave having experienced Kumaon honestly.

04

Something goes back

A portion of every planning fee funds crag development and climbing access in Kumaon. Not optional. Built in.

“It was an amazing experience bouldering with Siddhartha. He has sound understanding about the sport and is very considerate as a teacher. He understood my physical capacities and needs and taught me tricks that made me fall in love with the seemingly tough and new thing. His technical knowledge and long experience with the sport makes it fun and the learning smooth. It’s like opening up to a new dimension of existence.”

Shantanu · Traveller

“It was such a joy to get to dance on the rocks with you Siddhartha, that too my first bouldering experience in a natural environment. You were encouraging and kind, and I hope to climb with you often in the future.”

Ishan Khattar · Indian Actor

“I’ve done curated travel before. This was the first time I felt the person planning my trip had a genuine stake in the outcome, for me and for the place I was visiting.”

Marc Ragsdale · Founder and CEO
